Forest Management Consideration in Tough Economic Times

Date:    Saturday, May 30                    Registration deadline:  May 28

Time:    1:00-4:00 p.m.              Cost:  $10.00 per person

Presenter: Mike Greason, Certified Forester

Are you a forest landowner who would like to make informed decisions about your woodlands?   Gain information that will help to guarantee that you have a healthy and productive forest now and in the future.  During these tough economic times, poor decisions can negatively impact short and long term values of your woodlands.  For example, landowners who sell wood without professional input get significantly less income and end up with potentially unproductive forests for many years to come.  Also, as the stock market sputters along, your trees keep growing.  Although tree stumpage prices have gone down they have always rebounded, so your woodland ownership may be one of your best investment portfolios. Come and learn how to protect this investment

This intensive weekend program explores the challenges of working in plein-air directly from the landscape and provides an introduction to the traditional methods and materials of alla prima (direct) painting in oil paints.  Instruction will include a PowerPoint lecture and orientation session Friday evening during which we will discuss topics ranging from the history of plein-air painting, to the preparation of painting panels for use in the field, to step-by-step presentations of the instructor painting from a landscape and in the studio. On both weekend days in the field, the sessions will begin with a demonstration by the instructor.  Following the demonstration, students will receive individual instruction as they work on their own paintings.  Appropriate for beginners as well as experienced painters.

Artist and naturalist James Coe is known nationally as the author and illustrator of the Golden Field Guide Eastern Birds, and has contributed illustrations to numerous other guides, including the recently reissued Easy Bird Guide: West.  Jim is also a widely-exhibited painter of plein-air landscape paintings. His landscapes, which typically feature natural settings and rural scenes from New York’s Hudson River Valley and Northern Catskills, are recognized for their naturalistic palette and deft painterly handling.

Jim’s artwork has been featured in Wildlife Art and Fine Art Connoisseur (formerly Plein Air magazine), and his paintings have appeared on the covers of Sanctuary, Bird Watcher's Digest, Birding World, and The Auk, professional Journal of the American Ornithologist’s Union.  He is represented in permanent collections of the New York State Museum, Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Massachusetts Audubon Society, and Bennington Center for the Arts.  Today he is represented by the Windham Fine Arts Gallery in Windham, NY; Mark Gruber Gallery in New Paltz, NY, The Banks Gallery in Portsmouth, New London, and North Conway, NH, and  the Gregory James Gallery in New Milford, CT.

Jim lives with his wife and two children in a farmhouse on the Western rim of the Hudson River Valley, where he continues to seek a balance between plein air landscapes and larger studio canvases of birds in natural settings.  To learn more about Jim, visit www.jamescoe.com.  Please contact our office for information on lodging, if needed.

Tree Identification

Landscape Painting

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene County has some exciting programs taking place over the next two weeks.  The programs will take place at the Agroforestry Resource Center of Cornell Cooperative Extension located at 6055 Route 23 in Acra, NY.  Class sizes are limited and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Advance registration is required for all programs by calling the office at (518) 622-9820.  For a complete program listing, or other information on the Center, visit the web site www.agroforestrycenter.org.

Silvopasture: Grazing Livestock in Your Forest.  Saturday, June 6, 10:00 a.m -4:00 p.m.  $15.00 per person, $25/family (includes lunch).  The term silvopasture is currently being used to describe an interactive, complementary combination of high-value timber, high-quality forage, and highly-efficient livestock enterprises.  The Hudson Mohawk RC&D, along with CCE Greene will be hosting this silvopasture workshop devoted to a cursory, but comprehensive study of these integrative systems and of how the landowner can put them to use; considering their own specific sets of resource circumstances, and objectives for their land.  Information concerning planning of the systems, all the way through “how-to” implementation techniques and systems analysis will be offered in the training.

Container Workshop.  Wednesday, June 10, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Cost:  $10.00 per person.  Even the smallest patio or porch can boast a crop of vegetables or a garden of flowers in containers. Planter boxes, wooden barrels, hanging baskets and large flowerpots are just some of the containers that can be used. The container gardener is limited only by his imagination. Container gardens allow you to enjoy plants in areas where a traditional garden is awkward or impossible. Even with limited space in an urban apartment, you can grow fruits, vegetables, flowers and shrubs just about anywhere. Plants thrive on rooftops, decks, balconies, stairs and even on the stoop of your mobile home. Come and learn the “how to’s” of getting started with your own container garden.

Basic Vet Care.  Saturday, June 13, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  Cost:  $10.00 per person.  This program is intended to assist beginning, livestock "production practitioners" with learning about certain practices they can do on their own without having to call a veterinarian, or that they can proceed with before the vet arrives.  Discussion of how to set up an overall “Health Care Program” for the farm and how to administer it, working closely with a veterinarian's guidance.  Basic nutrition, vaccinations, types of medications, worming, and various veterinary surgical procedures that the livestock producer can perform for themselves will be a large part of the training.   A veterinarian will be with us to present information about the systems and practices, and CCE staff will add to the discussion.

Tree Identification.  Saturday, June 20, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p. m.  Cost:  $10.00 per person.  Have you ever wondered what kind of trees are in the landscape around you? Have you ever wanted to complete a tree identification leaf project for fair, but didn’t know how to begin?  This program will provide participants the chance to learn some tricks on tree identification and how to use tree identification books. We will also go on a stroll through the lovely Siuslaw Model Forest and use our tree identification skills. After the walk, information will be provided as to how you should mount and properly label specimens for a tree identification leaf project.

Landscape Painting in Plein Air Weekend Workshop with James Coe, Artist and Naturalist.  June 19, 20, 21, Times: Friday, 7:00-9:00 p. m. Saturday and Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Cost: $200 per person.  A list of necessary materials will be provided upon registration.
